InSight Data Usage Workshop

Where? Wills Memorial Building, School of Earth Sciences, BS8 1RJ, Bristol

When? Thursday, 9th April 10 am – 5.30 pm.

Who will run it? Dr Anna Horleston (University of Bristol), former co-lead of the InSight MarsQuake Service and Dr Constantinos Charalambous (Imperial), member of the InSight MarsQuake Service. Materials have also been contributed by Ben Fernando (Johns Hopkins), Mark Panning (JPL) and Tom Stein (PDS).

What exactly is it? In this free, in-person, 1-day workshop, run by members of the original InSight MarsQuake Service, we will introduce you to the InSight seismic dataset. InSight’s seismometer was active on Mars for nearly 4 years and collected an unprecedented dataset. We will cover:

  • details of the seismometer and its deployment
  • what data is available (all of it!)
  • how to download both continuous or event data from available archives
  • how to use the Marsquake Service catalogue
  • how to plot the data and create spectrograms
  • how to perform simple inversions
  • how to work with velocity models

Who is it aimed at? This workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in the seismic dataset from Mars. We will introduce you to the instrument and operational procedures on Mars and work through some prepared python workbooks within Google Co-lab – no installation required.

You will need a laptop but all code will be run in python co-lab so you do not need coding experience or a complete python set-up to join. Places are limited so please sign-up via this form.
